YOUSSEF ABDELKE

Youssef Abdelke, who was born in 1951 and currently resides and works in Syria, has a background in the arts that includes a degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts and a diploma in etching from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, which he received in 1986. He later went on to earn a PhD in Plastic Arts from University Paris VIII in 1989.

Over the course of the 1980s and 1990s, Abdelke created a series of artworks that featured engravings on copper and zinc as well as drawings with pastel, in which characters were portrayed with a sardonic twist. In more recent years, his art has focused on still life subjects such as knives, shoes, and large birds, which he has depicted using charcoal on paper.

Abdelke's works can be found in both private collections and museums, including the British Museum, the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Amman Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Kuwait.
